20s Acne Care Causes

Acne tends to be more frequent and widespread in your 20s due to active hormone levels and increased sebum production.
Areas without acne may appear relatively stable, but this does not necessarily mean the skin is fully healthy.
Proper skincare is essential during your teens and 20s to prevent the skin from becoming sensitive or dehydrated.
Maintaining a strong skin barrier is key to keeping the skin balanced and preventing further breakouts.

Stress, Hormones, and Acne

1. Stress as the Starting Point

Stress is the primary trigger. When you are under stress, your body produces more cortisol (the stress hormone).
→ When cortisol levels remain high, hormonal balance begins to break down.

2. Hormonal Changes

Increased cortisol → stimulates androgens (male hormones) → androgen levels rise → sebaceous glands become more active
→ At the same time, the balance of female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) is also disrupted.

3. Skin Reaction Process

→ Excess sebum production
→ Pore blockage
→ Bacterial growth (acne-causing bacteria)
→ Inflammation → acne formation

Acne that appears mainly on the chin, jawline, and lower cheeks is often a sign of hormonal acne.

Why Hormonal Acne is Common in Your 20s

  • Academic, career, and workplace stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Irregular lifestyle
  • Dieting and changes in eating habits

→ These factors continuously stimulate the hormonal system (HPA axis).

Common Causes of Acne

  • Lifestyle factors: lack of sleep, stress, irregular eating habits, dieting
  • Skin irritation: harsh cleansing, scrubbing, excessive extraction
  • Genetic factors: higher likelihood if parents had acne
  • Weakened skin barrier: over-cleansing or using unsuitable skincare products → worsens breakouts
